where they stand a 30% chance of light showers today and the radar at least indicating there's at least virga out there. for us plenty of low clouds to start out. we are going to be looking for things to remain persistently cloudy near the shoreline. as a result average numbers today as much as 13 degrees below normal. so expect another unseasonably cool day but there's changes in the look ahead and we'll have that coming up. but first let's get a bent metal update. >> there's not much. things are quiet now that we're past 5:00 a lot of the overnight roadwork at least in the clearing stages if not picked up altogether. earlier this morning at the bay bridge we had upper and lower deck roadwork. now it's gone. no delay in any lanes coming into s let's check the nimitz 880 in oakland. northbound 880 approaching embarcadero, that roadwork is all gone. so no big delays right now past the oakland coliseum or really coming from hayward.

everything is flowing nicely. it's the other direction southbound 880. this roadwork is running late. we just got off the phone with caltrans on this one various lanes blocked through downtown approaching broadway. you can see some delays from almost the 980 interchange. we'll have more traffic coming up. in the meantime, back to you. breaking news in oakland this morning. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is in the neighborhood where a 1-year-old child was shot and killed overnight. cate. >> reporter: frank, earlier family members were asking officers, are my son and grandson okay? tragically, that is not the case. into that family is grieving the loss of a 1-year-old baby boy and his father. this happened at a home on gormley avenue off interstate 880 and 98th avenue. this was just after 2:46 this morning. police say multiple shots were fired into the back of the home and they are not calling this a drive-by. oakland police say the man died at the home and his 1-year-old son later died at the hospital. right now there are no suspects in custody and the investigation continues. oakland police say they are

expected to give an update later this morning. until then there are still a lot of unknowns in the case. cate caugiran, kpix 5. you can ride ac transit buses this morning. a threatened strike was averted at the last minute last night. the union for the bus operators and mechanics says it has a tentative agreement with management. they are not releasing many details yet but it's a three- year deal that includes a 9.5% raise and concessions on healthcare. >> we have agreed to pay medical payments and we never had a problem with paying our share of the medical payments. so we have agreed to that also. >> i'm very grateful that the negotiations from both sides were done in a professional, respectful and courteous way. >> 1600 union members will vote on the proposed contract later this month. the bart labor dispute goes before a public hearing today. this morning management and the unions will make their cases to

several embassies and consulates. president obama addressed the ongoing threat in an unusual venue for something so serious. the tonight show with jay leno. >> this radical violent extremism is still out there. and we have to stay on top of it. >> and security officials in yemen say suspected u.s. drone strikes have killed 7 alleged al qaeda militants in southern yemen. this comes after american and british diplomatic staff members were airlifted out of that country yesterday. the justice department has filed criminal charges in the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. the complaint is sealed. so it's not clear how many suspects are charged but they include a man identified as the head of a libyan militia. last september's attack killed ambassador chris stevens and three other americans. a father makes a plea to his former friend to return his daughter back safely.

40-year-old james dimaggio is suspected of killing christina anderson. her body was found dead in a burned-out rubble of his home in san diego county sunday night. a child's body was found in the rubble. investigators say that could be anderson's 8-year-old son ethan. he and his 16-year-old sister hannah are missing. >> i can't fathom what you were thinking. the damage is done. i'm begging you to let my daughter go. you've taken everything else. >> investigators say anderson's kids considered dimaggio an uncle. dimaggio is believed to be driving a blue nissan versa with a california license plate, you see it there, 6, wcu, 986. investigators say he may be on the way to canada or texas. 5:06. we're following the latest developments in the disappearance of a federal investigator. sandra coke went missing in the east bay two days ago. kpix 5's anne makovec joins us from richmond where her cell

phone was apparently traced. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. one of her two cell phones found here at macdonald and wilson in richmond that's close to the highway i-80 right there behind me. so there's some question about whether or not the phone may have been thrown from a car window and ended up here. here's her picture, sandra coke, 50, 5'6", 150 pounds. she is missing. an investigator for the public defender's office specializing in death penalty cases. is her disappearance connected to her job or dog? her cocker spaniel ginny was stolen and two men asked $1,000 ransom for the dog. coke's sister theorizes she may have gone to meet with one of them and that may have something to do with her disappearance. >> she needs to come home. if there's anybody out there who knows about her or has her, please, let her go.

call the police. let her be in touch with us. >> reporter: here is the trail of clues as it stands now. sandra coke last seen sunday night at her home on aileen street in oakland. her car was found two miles away on 32nd street. coke's work cell phone was found in emeryville and her personal cell here in richmond. she is the mother of a teenaged girl. her family says this is out of character her for to go missing. anne makovec, kpix 5. >> what do we know about the neighborhood where her car was found? >> reporter: it was found undamaged. it was just parked there. the area is nobody for drugs. she doesn't appear to have any connection to that neighborhood. but just another question about what exactly happened here. >> thank you, anne makovec. 5:08. food, music and balloons brought bay area neighbors together to celebrate the 30th annual "national night out." the idea behind the event is to give neighbors a little chance to meet and greet and get to

know one another a little better and one block party in the maxwell park area of oakland everyone agreed on one thing. >> we live next door to one another. we should know who our neighbors are. we need new security. we need it so bad. >> a woman was show and killed while driving her car in the neighborhood recently. hundreds of events were held across the bay area last night. time now 5709. new this morning, power is back on for more than 37,000 people in san francisco. according to pg&e, the power went out just before midnight last night. the sunset, soma and chinatown districts were in the dark for an hour. pg&e believes an equipment failure at the substation caused this outage. elsewhere in the bay area, san jose city council members meet this afternoon to talk about new regulations for adult-themed gentleman's club. the issue came up recently when the gold club made plans to open in the historic san jose

gas station hitting the pylons africa reasoning into the station. it then settles into the bus bench. the driver gets out and tries to hail a cab. a witness says it's a good thing nobody was hurt. >> good things no one was on the bench waiting for the bus. >> no arrests in the crash. my goodness. and i guess the instinct is to get out of there. >> late to work or running from the law? >> alcohol? we don't know what was going on there. 5:14. elizabeth has a traffic check. >> we have a number of different mass transit issues both coming in at the same time. muni and caltrain delays. caltrain delays, we're hearing of up to 45 minutes in both directions. there's some sort of signal issue. at this point they don't know when it will be resolved. so even the trains that have

left are running at a reduced speed up to 45-minute delays for caltrain. and muni also experiencing delays on the n-judah and j- church. there's a fallen tree in san francisco around the intersection of san jose avenue and randall. they are running some shuttles in place of service but you can expect delays. bart, systemwide on time. they should have about 30 trains all running on schedule. let's go out to oakland. southbound 880 at broadway we still have that roadwork there. it's really running late causing some backups through downtown oakland just in the southbound direction. the northbound roadwork has been wrapped up. and if you are coming through the altamont pass, we are just beginning to see our usual brake lights through here approaching the livermore valley. it looks like once you got past -- well, maybe vasco, that's where we see an improvement on the sensors heading towards the dublin interchange. and a quick look outside here's a live look over towards the golden gate bridge. are there any cars? there's a few in both directions. they should have four lanes open southbound in the commute

direction heading into san francisco two in the northbound and as you can see things are looking good from sausalito to san francisco. that is your latest "timesaver traffic." i guess brian the roads may be a little slick this morning. >> a little tiny bit slick out there, miss w. we are starting out with numbers in the mid- to upper 50s and we have drizzle. drizzle to the point of light rain reported at the oakland airport and plenty of low clouds around as the marine layer begins to expand in the wake of the low pressure that's approaching the shoreline so expect a little clouds, a little drizzle and sunshine later in the day. but a cloudy start for the bay area. this afternoon clouds linger at the coast, sunshine coming out inland and we'll get a mix of sun and clouds like yesterday. and when the sun came out yesterday, the visibilities were spectacular all of this being ushered along buy low pressure off the shoreline. as long as that low is there and slowly comes closer to the coast, you have more drizzle this morning. i love this flow around the east side of the low coming right out of the south and triggers showers and

thundershowers over the sierra. they have a 20% chance out there. for us, this is how we start. we start with fog expanding well into the east bay at 7:00 this morning. but then as the day wears on, slowly it all burns back to the shoreline but you'll notice by the end of the loop it still hangs in here close to the ocean. but we'll get sun spreading from the inland valleys and if you are right in view of the golden gate swath you will have some fog. 61 pacifica. 79 morgan hill cool there. san jose almost 10 degrees below average. and we are also about 10 degrees back of average for livermore and antioch, only 77 degrees. 72 for napa. north bay low 70s for the most part still going to be nice this afternoon with sunshine coming out and more spring-like than summer-like temperatures but in the extended forecast, the numbers begin to warm into the 80s again inland. >> sunday's a winner. >> look at tuesday. skyrockets to the 90s. how will we stand it? it will be cool. >> thank you.

new this morning, this is the cleveland house where three women were held captive. it is being torn down now and one of the survivors michelle knight was on hand. she made a statement and released some balloons. a crowd of onlookers applauded as the demolition began. as you recall, ariel castro was sentenced last week to life in prison. a live look at the house in cleveland right now as they continue the demolition process he was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years. in texas today prosecutors will lay out their case against a man who went on on a shooting spree in fort hood. hassan is acting as his own attorney. he called himself a soldier who switched sides. in what he described as a war

between america and islam. a military judge reduced the maximum sentence for bradley manning. he now faces up to 90 years in prison instead of 136 years. his sentencing hearing is set to resume in maryland in a couple of hours. manning was convicted last week of leaking classified documents to the website wikileaks. new details about the rough landing by the southwest airlines flight 345. ntsb now investigating whether a last-minute pilot change caused the plane's nose gear to break as it landed at laguardia last month. they say the captain of the flight took control of the aircraft when the plane was below 400 feet. experts say it's very rare for control to be passed between pilots so close to landing. a wrongful death claim is being filed after a fallen tree killed a woman in the sierra foothills. 21-year-old aeneas rittenberg died last month when a tree fell on her.

just off of 880 and 98th avenue. it happened around 2:46 this morning. officers say the suspects were in the back of the home and fired multiple shots into their bedroom window. those shots killed a 1-year-old baby boy and his father. the father died at the scene. the 1-year-old died at the hospital later. right now police don't have any suspects in custody. and we understand that there is no suspect description at this point. we are also hearing that oakland's public information officer is en route and we should be looking for an update in the next few moments. live in oakland, cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> 5:31. we have developing news out of oakland where a federal government investigator has been missing more than two days. sandra coke's family is worried. she is in danger. the latest case she was working on was personal involving her stolen dog being held for ransom. two men told her they would give her the dog back for $1,000. those men ended up in jail, but

one of them recently got out. >> possible she was trying to meet with one of these guys, trying to get her dog back? >> that's what we surmise but don't know. >> sandra coke bass last seen sunday night at her oakland home. police found her car monday night about 2 miles away. her sister says sandra's work phone was found in emeryville and her personal cell phone was traced to richmond. 5:32. ac transit buses are picking up passengers in the east bay this morning. the threatened strike all averted about an hour before the midnight strike deadline late last night. the tentative contract includes a 9.5% raise and it has employees paying part of their healthcare costs now. it is a three-year deal. the union chief was asked about advice now for bart negotiators. >> stay there. you know? don't get tired. put in the long hours. do the work. and bring something back to the

chance to take on larry ellison ellison's team in september. this weekend there are many events. the giants are in town. the city hopes people will use public transportation if you have can. there will be buses running every five minutes from the civic center bart station to golden gate park and, of course, over to at&t park, as well. the city will also have extra officers directing traffic at some of the busier intersections here in the city. golden gate larkspur ferry offering free rides during off- peak hours. anyone could get on the boat from the ferry building in san francisco then head over to marin to larkspur landing. after you get across the bay you can pick up your free return ticket from any of the country mart stores there. the idea is to get people to sam and ride the ferries. fbi agents are zeroing in on several dangerous bank

robbers in the san francisco area. the up close bandit refers to the clear photos taken of him during robberies. the fbi says he walks in pretending to have a gun and then demands money. authorities think he hit two banks in san francisco since june. and these are surveillance photos of three criminals the fbi calls the high jumper bandits. since april, they are believed to have violently robbed five banks in san francisco and san mateo counties. the crew storms in with guns, jumps the counters and empties the cash registers. the fbi is concerned the robbers are become more violent violent. boycott russian vodka. >> gay rights advocates in san francisco dumped bottles of vodka to demonstrate their boycott of russian products. they are upset with laws in russia that makes it illegal to talk to children about

good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, frank and juliette. on wall street yesterday stocks were sharply lower. the dow plunged more than 93 points while the nasdaq was down 27 points. president obama outlined his plan to overhaul the nation's mortgage finance system. speaking in phoenix yesterday, mr. obama said he wants to phase out the giant mortgage lenders fannie mae and freddie mac. the president wants to put the private sector, not the government, primarily at risk on loans. he also wants to expand refinancing for homeowners and increase access to affordable rental housing. home prices soared almost 12% in june compared to the same time a year ago. according to core logic a limited supply and a stronger demand pushed those prices higher. >> and federal safety investigators say the pilot of that southwest jet that crashed at laguardia airport last month took control of the jet from the first officer when it was just 400 feet from the ground.

boy and used cpr to revive him. dustin hoffman has been successfully treated for cancer. his representatives telling "people" magazine hoffman is in good health now. the 75-year-old will have preventative treatments. no word what type of cancer he had but he is on the mend. former president george w. bush is expected to leave a dallas hospital today after having a heart procedure. doctors discovered an artery blockage during his annual physical. so yesterday, doctors inserted the stent. mr. bush is said to be in high spirits and is expected to get back to his normal schedule tomorrow. in today's healthwatch obesity rates are dropping among some children. the centers for disease control says for the first time in decades, obesity rates for low income preschoolers fell slightly in 18 states. and researchers now say the average pregnancy may not be 40 weeks. doctors at the national institutes of health followed more than 125 pregnant women

and found the actual average is about 38 weeks. researchers stress this is just an average. due dates among the women in the studies varied widely up to five weeks in some cases. we are in what they call the smell and taste season for some south bay water customers. from august until october, the combination of summer heat and low water levels in the san joaquin delta means increased algae in some south bay reservoirs. equipment at older facilities can't get rid of the smell and taste. but water officials say the water is safe to drink. >> i would imagine some people would look at that water and say, safe, yeah, right. >> right. >> yeah, some of the calls we get are often of that nature. i have explained to them the science behind it and why it comes from the dying off of the algae and it's a by-product and really all it is, is taste and odor. >> santa clara valley water district says they are having the most severe cases of algae in almost five years now.
